WORKERS’ COMPENSATION

HB 1362, the agreed bill between the State Chamber/AIA and the AFL-CIO, received a Do Pass recommendation this morning from the House Insurance and Commerce Committee. It will be considered by the full House as early as next Tuesday. This agreed bill received an unnecessary amount of questioning on issues unrelated to the purpose and intent of the bill by Representatives concerned about small contractors. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO SUPPORT HB 1362.

MANUFACTURERS SALES TAX EXEMPTION FOR UTILITY USAGE

Leading legislators continue working behind the scenes on many issues including our desire to further reduce the amount of sales taxes paid by manufactures on their energy costs. We fear the legislative support is not as strong as we need. It will be very helpful for them to hear how important this issue is to you. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO SUPPORT A FURTHER REDUCTION IN THE SALES TAXES PAID BY MANUFACTURERS ON THEIR ENERGY COSTS.

The best information you can provide them is a report on how much sales tax you are paying on electricity and natural gas used directly in the manufacturing process. Then consider and explain to your legislators how the savings would enhance your operation, save or increase jobs, improve competition, etc.

Arkansas is completely non-competitive with our surrounding states on this issue. Only Mississippi charges a 1 percent sales tax rate while the other border states charge no sales tax on manufacturers’ energy costs.
